On behalf of the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of Canada, we invite you to attend An Evening of Hope Gala on Saturday, November 24th at the Royal King Palace in Surrey, BC.
The Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of Canada is a registered not-for-profit charity organization that is dedicated to empowering the tribal and rural communities in India through education, skill development, health awareness, as well as through the learning of modern and productive agricultural practices and rural entrepreneurship. Ekal Vidyalaya, which literally translates to ‘a single teacher school’, educates those children who do not even have the basic necessities of life, which we take for granted. In the past 29 years, Ekal has built 75,559 schools and enrolled over 2 million children. The recent endorsement by the PM of India, Narendra Modi, has further accelerated support for the foundation. And yet, the illiteracy rate in India is still 10% lower than the world average. There are currently over 280 million Indians who have not received even a basic primary education.
Our GOAL at this year’s Gala is to raise $500,000 to build 1000 schools in Rural and Tribal India. What makes Ekal incredibly effective is that there is complete transparency in the organization, and a very small sum of money goes a long away. $500 CDN is all that is costs to run an Ekal school in rural India for 30 children for an entire year, and the school will be given the name chosen by the donor. 60% of the donation amount is spent on the teachers’ salary, 27% on teacher training, 5% on teaching material, and the final 8% on school administration to run the schools. Once the donation for a school has been made, the donor is able to log onto the Ekal website to see in which village the funds have been allocated and the foundation encourages and helps facilitate visits to the schools.
Last year, on December 1st, 2017, we hosted our first ever Ekal Gala in Surrey, BC. As a result that single Gala, we raised an incredible $130,000. The direct impact of the money raised was the enrolment and access of free education to 8000 children across India. And hence we realize the thirst within our community to truly make a profound difference in the lives of children. So lets join hands once again to help eradicate illiteracy from rural India to allow every child to reach their true potential. And since there is a strong correlation between illiteracy, poverty, and disease, we will be simultaneously eradicating poverty and disease as well.
