About the Class
The course is intended for those that want to get a deeper dive into the game of chess. Basics will be reviewed but it is suggested that the student knows how to move the pieces. We will be using chess.com, a free website that allows people to play chess against each other, to hold the tournaments. Each class will have the first hour be dedicated to the concepts being taught allowing students to learn from example positions. The second hour will be dedicated to playing tournaments allowing the students to face off each other, and giving them a taste of playing in online tournaments. Each class will have HW assigned, reinforcing topics learned in class.
Course Curriculum:
Day 1: How to play chess, and going over basics concerning moving pieces, and how to win the game.
Day 2: Basic tactics, such as forks, pins and skewers, that will allow the students to gain the upper hand in their games.
Day 3: Mating patterns, in order to checkmate the opponent quickly and effectively.
Day 4: Openings and basic opening principles
Day 5: Dedicated day to playing tournaments, and reviewing games from previous tournaments
